Walk searches

Many Ramblers’ groups submit walks to the Walks Finder section of the Ramblers’ web site. There you can find walks throughout Britain. For each walk there are details of date and start time and even a handy map to show you where the start point is.

You can search for walks using different criteria such as by town using Bournemouth Area Search or by local group East Dorset Group Search.

You can obtain a summarised printable programme here.

Walks for you

The Wessex Wanderer walks will be back for the summer of 2010, giving you walks that can be reached from the train lines between Weymouth and Bristol. Download their colour or black and white leaflet and find a walk you would like to go on. Further information about the Wessex Wanderer Walks can be found on the Avon Area Ramblers’ web site.

Have a look at the Jurassic Coast Trust web site, where there are walks and other events listed.

Walking in England draws together walks from a number of other walking web sites.

Weather and walks

East Dorset Group makes every effort to run the walks given in its programme and the walks will take place in most weather conditions as long as more than two walkers turn up to join the leader. However, the leader can cancel or shorten a walk at their discretion, for example if the weather is very bad or a path is impassable. If the leader decides to cancel a walk they will endeavour to get to the start to tell anyone else who turns up that it is cancelled, but in the case of fog, snow or ice, that might not be possible.

If you are concerned that extreme weather conditions might prevent a walk taking place, you can contact the relevant leader in advance of setting out (the phone numbers are in the Group programme). In such cases, please consider the road conditions that you could encounter on your way to the start and also for getting home if conditions deteriorate. Non-members or new members can check on walks by emailing us.

Challenges and Charities

East Dorset Group gets to hear about various local events but is usually unable to pass the information on to members in time as the newsletter, our only way of contacting all our members, is published only three times a year. Here is a roundup of such events.

⇒ Walk for Wildlife. On Sunday 19th September, three walks will take place in Purbeck to raise funds for vital conservation work in Dorset. The 5.8, 10 and 24 mile routes start and end at Church Knowle. Read more.

⇒ Can you HACK it? Take a look at this NSPCC site to find out about the East Devon Hike Against Cruelty to Kids, due to take place on 12th September 2010.

⇒ Walk or cycle. Ride + Stride, a sponsored walking and cycling event between churches. It is a quintessentially British event on Saturday 11th September, which raises money to repair church roofs or fix bell towers. Read more.

⇒ The village of Chaldon Herring (near Wool) is running a 3 hour 5 mile walk every Wednesday starting at 10.30, until 8th September, which guides interested parties around the literary and artistic history of Chaldon and the surrounding area. There is a small charge for the walk, which goes toward the cost of necessary repairs to our beautiful 14th century Church. Take a look at the poster.

⇒ Not quite so local, but here is another challenge with the Birmingham Canal Canter an unusually flat 26.2 miles around the canals of Birmingham on 18th September 2010.
